Climate change is a proven fact. Global warming has caused serious changes to the planet. As individuals we can slow down global warming by implementing sustainable actions within our community. These are some of the policies that I will support as your state senator:
Incentivizing Carbon Farming: We can combat climate change by reducing the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Carbon farming is a climate-smart agricultural practice that reduces greenhouse-gas emissions by sequestering carbon in the soil instead of promoting release into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide.
Investing in Sustainability: We can invest in transitioning to agricultural systems that lift up rural communities by supporting farmers practicing sustainable grazing practices, expanding the infrastructure for the growing grass-fed beef and dairy markets, and enforcing fair market and fair contract rules for the livestock industry. This will improve the quality of our food, air, soil, water and climate.
Supporting the Green New Deal: We need to transform our economy away from fossil fuels by 2030, ensuring that everyone has clean air and water, all in ways that prioritize justice and equity and support a strong economy. The Green New Deal would promote projects to eliminate climate-damaging gases exposed in the atmosphere, as well as ensure economic security—especially to people of color and to low-income and middle-class families.
Building and Redesigning Our Streets: We must make it safer and more convenient for people to walk and bike more and drive less, through making cycling, walking, and riding transit more comfortable, reliable, and affordable. This includes better lighting and crosswalks for pedestrians, protected bike lanes for bicyclists, and good shelters and signage for people waiting for the bus.
Protecting Our Parks and Recreation: Parks and trails are proven to improve water quality, protect groundwater, prevent flooding, improve the quality of the air we breathe, provide vegetative buffers to development, produce habitat for wildlife, and provide a place for families to connect with nature and recreate outdoors. We must protect our environment through use of natural resources, retain existing parks and trails, create new opportunities for outdoor recreation and non-motorized transportation, encourage physical fitness and healthy lifestyles, and make our community an even better place to live by preserving and creating open spaces.
